Director/Lead Organizer for United Interfaith Action of SE Massachusetts (New Bedford and Fall River)

A position at United Interfaith Action (UIA)

United Interfaith Action (UIA) is looking for a person who has experience as a community organizer or labor organizer.

Hours: Full-time

United Interfaith Action of SE Massachusetts (UIA) organizes in the cities of Fall River and New Bedford. Both are working class, multiracial, multiethnic cities of 90,000. They are located about 50 miles southwest of Boston and 15 miles east of Providence, RI.

UIA was formed in 1997 and has a long record of accomplishments on after school, crime prevention, ESOL and GED funding issues. We are an institution based/congregation based, multi-issue, multiracial, dues based community improvement organization.

UIA recently organized 500 people to meet last month on the school drop out issue. The Mayor of New Bedford and a majority of School Committee members attended and signed UIA's compact to increase graduation rates and college attendance rates by specific amounts. In Fall River, UIA is focusing on increasing funding for public transportation to deal with both cost and access issues.

We are looking for a person who has experience as a community organizer or labor organizer. Please don't apply unless you have such experience!!

The job of Director/Lead Organizer focuses on:

1) Issues like jobs, crime prevention, affordable housing, health care, transportation
and developing the strategies that will lead to concrete improvements in the lives of people affected by these issues.

2) Leadership development--we define leaders as people who can organize others to act together with them around shared goals. Most people can become such leaders if they give the time and bring commitment to it. Additional skills of leadership are taught in the process of the organizing on issues and in leadership training sessions.

3) Outreach especially through 1:1 relational meetings

We care about you as a person and your development as an organizer and director.
We will invest in your development through training, supervision, national trainings.
We believe good organizers are curious about developing themselves as persons of wide experience and people who desire to learn more about politics, economics, history, and religion.

UIA is affiliated with the Massachusetts Communities Action Network (MCAN), a statewide federation of six organizations including UIA which work together on statewide issues like funding for youth violence prevention programs and job training. www.mcan-oltc.org
MCAN is also affiliated with the PICO National Network of faith based community improvement organizations www.piconetwork.org
