POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
ECONOMIC JUSTICE PROJECT MANAGER/ATTORNEY

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of the Boston Bar Association (Lawyers’ Committee) seeks a full-time attorney/manager for its Belin Economic Justice Project.

Background: The Lawyers' Committee is a private, non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting race and national origin discrimination through impact litigation, individual case representation, community education, community economic development, and policy advocacy. Lawyers' Committee staff attorneys and pro bono attorneys from member law firms provide legal representation to combat racial and national origin discrimination in a number of areas of law, including housing, education, employment, public accommodations, voting, predatory lending, racial violence, and police misconduct.

Title: Belin Economic Justice Project Manager

Qualifications: The Economic Justice Project provides free business legal assistance to low-income entrepreneurs who are starting or expanding small businesses that are located in historically disadvantaged communities of color and/or service the needs of these communities. The ideal candidate will possess some business or corporate law experience as well as:

• Strong organizational and project management abilities;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• An ability to strategize and think creatively;
• An interest in economic justice and commitment to working on behalf of low-income clients;
• An ability to work well with people of various cultural, social, and economic backgrounds; and
• An ability to work independently and as part of a team or coalition.
The candidate must have a JD degree and be licensed to practice law. An ability to speak Spanish is highly desired, but not required.

Duties: The Project Manager is the link between volunteer attorneys and small businesses and entrepreneurs in historically disadvantages communities of color. The Project Manager will lead an active community outreach program in the many different neighborhoods of color in Boston and the surrounding area. The Manager will also participate in local and regional community development committees and initiatives. The successful Manager will not only direct the current program effectively but will also innovate and plan for the expansion of the program.

The Manager is expected to direct a program of community-based business workshops and clinics, which includes working with pro bono attorneys to develop curricula for legal workshops, coordinating workshops with economic development organizations, conducting intake and initial screenings of potential clients, scheduling clients for legal clinics, working with law firms to staff the legal clinics, and teaching seminars to classes of entrepreneurs. The Economic Justice Project is designed to provide start-up and existing businesses with legal representation. To this end, the Manager’s responsibilities include conducting consultations, placing clients with pro bono attorneys, and co-counseling with pro bono attorneys on certain matters.

The Manager is an integral part of the Lawyers’ Committee and is expected to work cooperatively with the other attorneys in the office, participate in staff meetings and case discussions, take an active role in developing short and long range plans for the office, contribute to fund raising efforts, and supervise law student interns.
