BU Lab Risk Assessment Gets Failing Review

BOSTON, Mass. - November 29, 2007 - A scathing new report says a federal safety review of the Boston University Biolab was not "sound and complete."

The report from the National Research Council was commissioned by the state, after a judge ordered further review of the nearly $200 million project in the South End.

It says authors from the National Institutes of Health failed to address community concerns and the dangers of working with deadly germs in an urban neighborhood, as well as other important issues relevant to building the lab.

The report has no immediate impact on the lab, which is more than halfway to completion.
